Why don't more people have robot mowers, and should I get one?

Robot mowers are worth considering when weekly mowing takes too much time or paid lawn service is expensive. For a 1/3-acre lawn, annual mowing costs can reach around $1,800, so a robot mower may pay for itself within one or two seasons if it replaces regular mowing service.

The reason they are not more common is mainly practical: high upfront cost, installation concerns, boundary wire issues, limited dealer support, theft worries, and low awareness. Many homeowners also expect a mower to replace a full lawn service, but a robot mower mainly handles cutting the grass. Edging, trimming, leaf cleanup, and general yard work still need separate attention.

Performance depends more on lawn layout than size alone. Flat, open yards are ideal, while slopes, roots, narrow passages, stepping stones, wet clay soil, and many obstacles require better navigation and careful setup. A good installation may need several adjustments at first, but once the map, boundary, or no-go zones are tuned, daily operation becomes much easier.

Frequent mowing is the key advantage. Instead of cutting tall grass once a week, a robot mower trims a small amount every day or every other day, often around 1/4 inch or less. This helps reduce clumping, keeps the lawn even, and allows fine clippings to break down naturally.

A robot mower is not completely hands-free. Blades need replacement, edges still need a string trimmer, and rough yards may cause occasional rescues. It is a strong choice for homeowners who want to save time and maintain a consistently short lawn, but it works best when the yard is suitable and the owner accepts some setup and light maintenance.
